Birthday Month!
Green and lush and warm July
I’m early this month- sending this out to y’all at June slips away, on a sunny afternoon in the backyard, getting ready for sweaty and sultry July.
It’s our very last day of vacation! Thank you all for giving us this week away. We managed to pack in an abundance of family time, and one long, long unplanned night in the Chicago airport. It was my first time in Oregon (and on the West Coast of the US), and it was truly incredible. Driving through the Willamette valley was a remarkable experience after so much time spent reading and writing about this wine-rich landscape.
We also took a quick skip to Maine, and now we’re settling back into our homes. Fox will be open back up tomorrow to regular hours. We’ll also be open regular hours all week- we’re not closing for the Fourth this year. Come hang out with us, we’ll be hosting our first Irish Session again after almost six weeks off!
Also, Happy Early Birthday to Doni (7/11)- let’s hope he doesn’t celebrate with a flood again…
Irish Sessions are back in full swing for the rest of the summer!

July Wine Clubs
This month, we chose two wines from Libertine Wines, who we have adored for years. There are truly incredible West Coast domestic winemakers, creating things that are fun, lovely, clean, thoughtful, limited intervention, and we love highlighting these folks who are truly doing things right, the way Libertine does. It doesn’t hurt that both of these Libertine wines are crushable and refreshing, perfect for the long, hot days of July.
Libertine Wines, Dolcetto Rosé
This wine holds the balance between lightbodied red and rose, embodying the joys of both in harmony. A Dolcetto grown in the Sunnyside vineyards of the Willamette Valley, this wine is full of ripe strawberrye notes and bold minerality. There’s a crunchy, almost salty quality, and a shock of tropical notes, almost like a dripping bite of pink guava. It is unfined and unfiltered, it feels pure in its natural winemaking traits, and yet still has a round, mature, and thoughtful quality. It ages on neutral French oak barrel, which creates and warmth and rounding that sets it apart. The Dolcetto is a wine that would be just as perfect alongside BBQ red meats as it would alongside fish and seafood dishes.
Libertine Wines, Gamay Noir
This blanc de noir wine (a white wine made from red grapes) is truly a bursting, delicious, tropical playground of a wine. It feels out of this world and utterly unique, with tingling and lush mango, tart pineapple, bright tamarind, and key lime pie notes, complete with an almost creamy finish. It is a white wine that stands out, without being so strong it overpowers or so tart it yanks hard on your cheeks. This wine is clean, bright, and approachable, even as it sets itself apart. It is free of tannins, and yet still holds its own alongside foods- think of it as the start of the party bottle, perfect for charcuterie laden with salty, cured meats, clean, fresh cheeses, and beautiful pairing jams. It also would be a great bottle for wandering down to the river, alongside fresh picked berries, simple bread or crackers, and creamy chevre.
